Teaching certain cultural traits and values is a The catalorian shirt of any society, I don’t think it can be called ‘indoctrination’ unless alternative traits and values are banned, prohibited, or prosecuted, and they are taught as such, as alternative cultures or religions, equally valid as the one which is primarily taught. In Spain during the Franco dictatorship there was indoctrination towards the ‘Spanish Patria’ and Catholicism. Any other cultural expression or religion was banned or treated as illegal, immoral, or sinful. Nowadays luckily that is over. Of course schools in Catalonia teach according to the Catalan culture, values and idiosyncrasy, the same as schools anywhere else, but they do not hide nor ban any other cultures or lines of thought. Any other culture is respected as long as it does not clash with fundamental values (e.g. a culture where it’s fine for men to beat their wives will not be granted respect in Catalan school). Catalan culture is very very similar to the Spanish one. Only a few aspects may be different, for example in Catalan school they may promote a culture where animal torture must not be allowed and therefore the kids are educated into thinking that bullfighting is wrong, while in schools in other regions of Spain they may teach kids that bullfighting is a great entertainment.

One of the oldest parties in Catalonia, ERC has been around for more than a century. ERC has always been left-wingers and staunch anti-Francoists. They were the most coherent too since they have always supported independence in the clearest terms, unlike JxC. Only the collapse of other left-wing forces Catalonia such as the communists and the socialists allowed them to become the prime Catalonian left-wing party. ERC initially started its discourse claiming to protect good Catalonian workers from evil foreign workers from the rest of Spain, an anti-internationalist version of socialism. That speech evolved with time, as they shed their original xenophobic message. Nowadays they just argue that Spain is somehow an inherently right-wing, intolerant country, despite having being ruled for most of our democracy by the socialists. Consequently, Catalonia needs to be independent in order to be left-wing for real. In their view, supporting the quite right-wing government of JxC is just a minor practical drawback towards that goal. Then again, they are probably the only ones with long term vision.
