Several years back we took our daughter to Im a Disney Mimi its like a regular grandma but more magical minnie shirt in Orlando, Florida. On the way back she was pulled aside and questioned while her carry-on Minnie Mouse suitcase was searched. The TSA guy asked us all the standard questions about weapons, etc. and she was starting to get very scared and grabbed my hand. Then the TSA agent pulled out the souvenir “magic wands” from Harry Potter and said he should confiscate them as they had sharp points and could be considered a weapon. He was being a Grade A pain in the ass. The TSA agent called his supervisor over and gave the wands to him. The supervisor knelt down and said to her that the airlines are run by muggles and it’s not a good idea to take those wands anywhere in the future. He then made her promise not to turn his workers into ferrets for making her scared. She smiled and promised no magic until she got home. He put the wands back in the boxes they were packaged in and put them in a plastic bag. He then taped them up with TSA tape and put them in her suitcase again.

I used to train as a martial artist of the Wah Lum Praying Mantis style, the same style that Sifu Mimi teaches. My family is very good friends with her parents, and while I do not study kung fu anymore, I still respect and support Sifu Mimi and the Chans. Growing up in the American South, I was not exposed very much to people like me in the media. I remember watching Sesame Street and being in awe every time Alan was on screen. My favorite Teletubby was Po because I got the vibe she was Asian (and I was very excited that her actress was). Mulan was my savior. She normalized a mysterious culture for my non-Asian peers, kids who, to no fault really of their own, thought that Chinese people ate egg rolls and nothing else. She taught me strength, and she taught me courage. She taught me to be proud of my Chinese heritage. On the other hand, some of the aftershocks were not so beneficial. While Mulan brought Chinese culture to the forefront, that was it. It was just Mulan. I grew up being compared to her, and even more so when I began kung fu training. I was always Mulan; if I didn’t live up to that image, I was not worth being paid attention
