The summer between my junior and senior year of high school I went to Im a Disney Grammy its like a regular grandma but more magical minnie shirt with a group from our school. My dad was a pilot, so flying wasn’t a big deal and I really wasn’t looking forward to the long flight from Knoxville, TN to LAX (with a flight change in Atlanta, of course…my dad used to say you couldn’t go to hell without a layover in Atlanta first) and another long flight to Hawaii. So naturally I brought some things with which to entertain myself and our group. On the flight from Atlanta to LAX, a group of young black men had been talking to us on and off. They told us they had just signed a record contract and were off to LA to try and make it big. One of the guys asked to borrow my deck of cards and I told him “sure”. He was so polite and very nice. When we got close to landing in LA, he returned my cards and thanked me for giving them something to relieve both their boredom and their nerves. He looked me straight in the eyes and said “My name is Peabo Bryson. Remember that name because you are going to hear it again sometime

I am (partially) a session musician, on trombone and tuba. I’m on a bunch of Canadian pop and jazz albums, the Disney Jazz album, a few Cirque du Soleil recordings, and a bunch of UbiSoft video game soundtracks, as well as some films like “Les Triplettes de Belleville” that won an Oscar. Certainly not everything I recorded ended up on the final mixes of every project. I am also on at least one Grammy-winning album, and the one I am thinking about I must have recorded at least 12 different parts on 3 different tunes. When I got my copy of the CD in the mail, only ONE of my parts on ONE tune appeared in the final mix. The artist (who was also the producer) had almost a hundred tracks of different instruments played by different performers, and the album was mostly created in mixdown, and in the process most of the tracks for each tune ended up being dumped. No problem; it was up to the producer to decide which parts to use and how to mix them. I wasn’t insulted, and I knew I played up to professional standards. I still got paid, and I have some awards to list on my resumé!
